Inauguration of “Marubi” National Museum of Photography

Inauguration of “Marubi” National Museum of Photography

National-Photo-Gallery-Marubi

On May 9th 2016, in Shkodra, on Europe Day, the “Marubi” National Museum of Photography was inaugurated. Participants in the opening ceremony were the Prime Minister of Albania, Mr. Edi Rama, the Minister of Culture, Mrs. Mirela Kumbaro, Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Niko Peleshi, Minister of Defence, Mrs. Kodheli, Minister of State for Local Issues, Mr. Bledi Çuçi, the Executive Director of the Albanian Development Fund, Mr. Benet Beci, representatives of donors who enabled the establishment of the museum, representatives of the diplomatic corps, regional deputies, representatives of the Shkodra Municipality and the District and numerous residents of Shkodra.

The project for using the Marubi archive and creating this new museum was supported by a joint initiative of the Albanian-American Development Fund and the Ministry of Culture, financed by the Albanian Government, European Union through HERA Project, Albanian-American Development Foundation and the Government of Switzerland during 2013-2016.

The idea for creating a National Museum of Albanian Photography resulted from the necessity to introduce the public to one of the most precious treasures of Albanian and world national heritage, which is the photographic archive of Marubi Dynasty and enriched by 9 other photographers who are companions in the Albanian history of photography.

The backbone of the Marubi National Museum is the Photo-Studio ”Marubi” which was founded in 1856 by Pietro Marubbi, an Italian painter and photographer, 19 years after the invention of photography. Photo Studio Marubi was managed by three other generations of photographers until 1946, when Gegë Marubi decided to close it. It reopened later in 1970 under the name of Marubi Photo Gallery, as a sector within the Historic Museum of Shkodra, and with an archive of over 500.000 glass negatives of different sizes and techniques.
